How to Prepare Your Child for a Tooth Extraction

Has your child been recommended to undergo a tooth extraction? If so, you may be worried about how they will handle the procedure. As a parent, you can help shape their experiences into a positive one by providing them the information they need and emotional support. Giving your child a positive experience will help them learn how to value dental care and visit the dentist without being afraid.

Here at Longhorn Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics, aside from offering comfortable teeth extractions for your child, we also want to help you prepare your little one for the procedure. Know some tips by reading below:

Stay positive

You’ll inevitably have to tell your child about the procedure. When doing so, let your child know that this will make their teeth healthier. Even if you feel nervous yourself, stay positive, so that your child will feel more relaxed and confident. According to a study, the presence of a nervous parent negatively affects a child’s behavior during teeth extractions.

Let your child ask questions

Allow your child to ask you lots of questions about the procedure. You can talk to your pediatric dentist in advance so you can learn about the answers to give your child. Aside from that, you can also check out online videos for kids that explain the procedure to help ease their fears.

Make the day as relaxing as ever

Plan for the day of the procedure to be as relaxing as possible. Find an activity that your child will enjoy and let them do it, whether it’s playing a game or visiting a park. Make sure that your child gets an adequate amount of sleep the night before. Additionally, you can get your child movie tickets or a new book since they won’t be able to eat after the procedure.

Bring your child’s comfort objects

If your child has a favorite stuffed toy or a blanket, let them bring it. Comfort objects like these ease stress and create a link between a scary situation and the feeling of home. Also, it would be best if you also let your child listen to an audiobook or their favorite music as a form of distraction.
