Tell the child to apply pressure on the extraction site by biting down on a piece of damp cotton gauze. Make sure to do so for ten minutes. If it continues, repeat the process for another ten minutes. If bleeding is still not under control, it is best to seek the assistance of a dentist by calling our practice.
Discourage the use of straw or swishing
The sucking and swishing motions can disrupt the much-needed formation of a blood clot for the successful healing of the site. Aside from the painful development of a dry socket, it is even possible for bleeding from ensuing.
Introduce a saltwater rinse
The day following the extraction procedure, it is best to clean the exposed site by rinsing a solution of salt and lukewarm water for 30 seconds. Doing this tip not only cleans the mouth but alleviates pain as well.
Children Do’s and Don’ts
- Chew on the opposite side of the mouth in the meantime
- Let them eat soft and cold foods to avoid or even manage discomfort
- Do not let them poke the extraction site with their fingers and tongue to allow the formation of a blood clot
- Children should relax and get the rest they need for better recovery
- Do not perform strenuous activities
- Do not eat or drink hot substances while the mouth is still numb
To know if your child needs a tooth extracted, the dentist would assess the state of their teeth. Do understand that extraction is often considered for the benefit of the overall oral health.
