Teeth Extractions for Children in Austin
There are various cases in which we may need to remove a child’s tooth. This could be due to a serious oral health injury or because the tooth was growing in an undesirable way. We refer to this process as a tooth extraction.
The team at Longhorn Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics will do everything possible to keep your child comfortable during a tooth extraction.
When a tooth needs to be extracted, we may take digital X-rays of the structure and the surrounding areas. This will help our pediatric professionals determine the safest way to remove the tooth. Nothing is done without a treatment plan! We will then provide any necessary sedation for your child. Basic teeth extractions can usually be accomplished using a local anesthetic to numb the area, alongside laughing gas to keep your child relaxed. Both methods are extremely safe for children of all ages.
The process involves the use of a special tool to pull the tooth from the mouth in the safest way possible, and the process is usually over in a matter of seconds. And since the area of your child’s mouth will be numb, they shouldn’t experience any noticeable pain or discomfort. Most children just report experiencing a slight feeling of pressure.
Your child will then be asked to bite down on a gauze pad for 30 to 45 minutes. Doing this will allow a blood clot to form at the extraction site. This will stop the bleeding and put them on the right track for healing. They must avoid tampering with the blood clot to prevent reopening the wound. This means that they shouldn’t participate in any athletic events, dangerous activities or use a straw for at least the following day.
You can help your child reduce any swelling by having them use an ice pack on the outer cheek nearest to the extraction site. You can also allow your child to perform gentle rinses with warm salt water to keep the area clean. Most children heal after just a few days of recovery following a tooth extraction.
Longhorn Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics also offers a special Dental Assistant Training Program for our older patients. This is a fantastic program for teens who feel they may be interested in pursuing a career in dentistry later in life. The program lasts 13 sessions, with classes being held on either Saturdays or Sundays. We are happy to provide more information for teens and their parents.
