Fluoride is an essential aspect of maintaining of good oral hygiene. While there are multiple ways to achieve the benefits of fluoride, at Longhorn Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics, we offer fluoride applications for children aged two and up.
Children are susceptible to cavities, especially with developing teeth and a diet that consists of more candy than they should probably have! Fluoride is known in the dental industry as “the best cavity fighter.” Fluoride is a mineral that can be found in all sources of water, most notably the oceans. Fluoride, when absorbed by the enamel, has been proven to reduce cavities and even repair tooth decay in its earliest stages. A fluoride treatment takes only 20 to 30 minutes, and can go a long way protect your child’s teeth from cavities!
Fluoride is found in water and other natural sources, but a concentrated treatment involves a topical solution that comes in the form of a gel, foam or varnish. When left on the teeth for 20 to 30 minutes, the enamel will absorb the solution and repair dental caries.
When fluoride is absorbed by the enamel, it makes repairs at the microscopic level, replenishing calcium and phosphorous that may have been lost due to bacteria or decay. This process of repairing the enamel is called remineralization.
Fluoride treatments may be recommended every three months, six months or 12 months. Each case is different, however, so our dentist can help determine which is right for your child!
